How do you find new music?

Asked by ellespark (523points) January 22nd, 2019

Do you prefer recommendations from friends? Listen to the radio? Do you let Spotify or Pandora pick stuff?

I’m guilty of making a playlist and listening to the same 40 or so songs for a year before making a new playlist. And I’m looking at the musicians nominated for Grammys and only recognize a few of them.

Up until recently I had a subscription to Prog Magazine (I let it lapse). I got new music recommendations from that.

It used to be friends’ recommendations but now sometimes I pick up on someone who comes up on one of my self-created Pandora stations.

My car’s radio.

Youtube playlists that people publish. When I find a music geek that knows their stuff I take a sampling of their playlist. Sometimes music I already like leads to others of similar taste.

1)
KCRW’s Eclectic 24 is a station I can work to, and everything they play is outside my usual preference for classical, jazz, and old rock.

2)
Also my local public radio station has two fantastic music shows. Or had. One just ended, the host retired. Tony Sarabia had a show called Radio M and he has an astoundingly wide taste in music from around the world.

3)
The remaining local show I love is Reclaimed Soul from Ayana Contreras . Ayana is a motivated crate digger, looking through LP collections for the gold. I honestly expect her to get a MacArthur grant for her work cataloging music history.

8PM – 10PM Central Time Thursdays here is the streaming URL, highly recommended

I used to rely on friends recommendations. Now I’ve set up a Pandora station & I’ve found many artists that I enjoy!!! I’m over the hill & I enjoy the good, old Blues; so, I’m somewhat limited to the good Blues musicians. There are NO good Blues radio stations here; so, I’ve installed an mp3 player in my car & I’ve got a 64 GB flash drive full of The Blues. That’s a ton of hours & it takes a long time to get to the repeat stage. I also like a lot of the Classic Rock & I have another 64 GB flash full of Classic Rock. I also have a 32 GB flash full of my favorite Christmas tunes that I play when the mood strikes!!!

I get my recommendations from tv news.

Almost all of my favorite new music has been from checking out albums at the library. They usually carry some of the best indie/lesser known music artists.

I listened to I Heart Radio for a while. Pandora or Spotify work the same way. I put in an artist I like and they played music like that. Could have been music from the same era or the same style. I found some good bands and songs that way.

From Spotify or Apple Music. You can find New Music Rlease section for you in Spotify. And there is a New Music listed on the Apple Music.
