How did you get your username?

Asked by BrentM (68points) July 7th, 2020

Quite self-explanatory actually. Mine is just my name and the initial of my last name, but some usernames I’m curious for the meaning behind. I see one user quite frequently (I will not name them as I have no consent of their’s to disclose their username) and I was curious as to the meaning behind it.

I was knighted “Dutchess” on a now dead website named Wis.dm. We were in a heated battle with evil Power Ranger. A Dutchess was called for.

Back in the 60s the 2 most frequently published letters to the editors of Mad Magazine were penned by either Melvyn Cowznofski or Stanley B Manly.

My username was what came to mind when given a very odd question in a job interview. I googled the question and ended up here. My very first response is the answer I wanted to give in the interview. I probably would have gotten the job if I said it.

The name and hull number of the submarine I served on. Had to change the “o” to a “u” though. The “o” version was already taken on other sites.

From this tale:

A Zen teacher saw five of his students returning from the market, riding their bicycles. When they arrived at the monastery and had dismounted, the teacher asked the students, “Why are you riding your bicycles?”

The first student replied, “The bicycle is carrying the sack of potatoes. I am glad that I do not have to carry them on my back!” The teacher praised the first student, “You are a smart boy! When you grow old, you will not walk hunched over like I do.”

The second student replied, “I love to watch the trees and fields pass by as I roll down the path!” The teacher commended the second student, “Your eyes are open, and you see the world.”

The third student replied, “When I ride my bicycle, I am content to chant nam myoho renge kyo.” The teacher gave praise to the third student, “Your mind will roll with the ease of a newly trued wheel.”

The fourth student replied, “Riding my bicycle, I live in harmony with all sentient beings.” The teacher was pleased, and said to the fourth student, “You are riding on the golden path of non-harming.”

The fifth student replied, “I ride my bicycle to ride my bicycle.” The teacher sat at the feet of the fifth student and said, “I am your student!”

Pandora's avatar

I choose Pandora for my inquisitive nature. I’m always looking up random information on stuff that piques my curious mind.

stanleybmanly's avatar

But the monicker is the universal prototype for associating curiosity and inquisitive nature with assured and swift catastrophe.

Pandora's avatar

@stanleybmanly But in the jar she contained hope. I don’t see her story as her curiosity help set destruction in the world but rather about how hope always remains and is never lost. Holding onto hope is how you get past catastrophe. Without hope you truly lose everything.

stanleybmanly's avatar

Optimism? Curiosity cured the cat?

Pandora's avatar

@stanleybmanly The saying goes; Curiosity killed the cat but satisfaction bought him back.. At least how I remember telling a teacher years ago when he said my curiosity would be the death of me. LOL
