Do you find yoga to be relaxing?

Asked by RayaHope (7448points) July 30th, 2022

I think a good yoga session is so invigorating and helps me focus on stuff better. Helps with my dancing and keeping in shape. I know some people aren’t that flexible but there are less stressful versions.

Don’t know anything about it. My form of relaxing is being an elbow and cooking on my grill. Yoga would probably give me a heart attack.

Bending an elbow I meant. Stupid typos

No. I’m very inflexible and as I get older I have some muscle problems. Yoga for me is mostly frustrating and boring.

I much prefer a ballet or zumba class.

It’s too bad, because I know people who teach and take yoga and they look amazing, but I think they are mostly naturally flexible anyway. Sure you can improve flexibility over time, but some people could always touch their toes and some never could. I never could, not even when I was 8 years old in ballet and gymnastics.

Oh yes touching the floor with my palms is easy, I can even put my head between my knees. My friends say I don’t have any bones. lol, I have done a little Zumba and that is also fun.

Yoga is something that the “idea” always appealed to me; however, practicing it has NEVER become a reality!!! Instead, I did practice meditation. It appears my mind is more willing than my body!!!

RayaHope's avatar

I’ve tried to mediate but I have a hard time staying focused for so long. My mind tends to wander and I try to get back on track but after a while it gets frustrating and I give up.

When I first started trying to meditate, I had much the same problem. I found that when my mind started to wander that it was best for me to just STOP, wait a few moments, & then start over. The brain eventually figured out that it’s NOT OK to wander. The other thing that helped was to take my index finger & press the fleshy pad into my forehead between my eyebrows just above my nose. That seemed to help keep my brain more focused. Don’t know IF that might help you or not, but you might want to try it.

“Relaxing” no. “Invigorating” definitely.

I’m flexible but I don’t find yoga relaxing. It feels good to stretch but it’s not relaxing.

Placing one in a pretzel doesn’t sound appealing to me I’d rather be hiking and moving about instead.

RayaHope's avatar

@Inspired_2write fair enough, many people aren’t very flexible I guess. I have always been flexible my friends say I have no bones in my body.

@RayaHope

.Even if I was that flexible I would not like wasting my time indoors doing odd contortions

I was a fitness instructor in the 1980’s and was flexible then and getting more so now

( lost a lot of weight and kept fit in my 70’s)..but still not excited about Yoga.

I attended a couple of classes and found out that it really depends on the competence of the Yoga instructor.

Most are too young and although they go through the set of flexibility know that that is not the only way to teach Yoga.

A competent practiced real Yoga Instructor will teach mind and body exercises to enlighten a

persons’ Spirituality etc ( Eastern Yogi ) as its main purpose was.

Somehow it became a fad here in the Western World, so far removed from the original intent

of Master Yogi instructors.

I used to watch this yoga instructor on tv, can’t remember her name, but she was also into the spiritual side and did do some meditation and relaxation poses. I really liked watching and practicing with her.

Yes, I really enjoyed it pre-Covid. I’m only doing zumba now but hopefully more classes open up again soon.

RayaHope's avatar

@KNOWITALL here’s to crossing fingers for more classes :)

Love_my_doggie's avatar

No! Yoga is the most boring thing I’ve ever done. I never found any relaxation, just frustration about the tedium.

RayaHope's avatar

@Love_my_doggie maybe you were doing it wrong? Or you are just not flexible enough, it can be tough on some people.

Love_my_doggie's avatar

^^^ No, I did various types of yoga just fine, and I’m a “gym rat” who works out 6X per week and is extremely flexible. I simply find yoga to be a dreary waste of time.

I spend my workouts doing a combination of cardio-vascular exercise and weight/strength training. Those activities both invigorate and relax me.

RayaHope's avatar

Oh, that is excellent! I love the treadmill when I go to the guy but I don’t go that often.
