How do you stop Alexa from playing the news automatically?

Asked by mazingerz88 (28832points) October 21st, 2022 from iPhone

Without instruction, our lone Alexa device which I placed in the kitchen just started playing the news daily at 7 am. Asked her to stop doing that and she has no response. Read on the net that I may need to have the Alexa app to stop this auto-feature but I’d rather not do that. Is there another way? Thanks!

A five pound hammer should suffice and don’t be fooled by her pitiful cries for mercy.

Unplug the damn thing!!!

Check your cell. You probably already have an Alexa app on it. Since your lone Alexa works, it was initially set up with an app…so, you already have one lurking in your universe & you just don’t know it!!! This tells you how to set up the news; so, I’m assuming that turning off the news would just be the reverse.

IF you can’t find your Alexa app, I suggest you add one to your phone for at least long enough to turn off the news & then you can uninstall it. Another suggestion. Give Alexa an instruction to “Cancel News Alarm”. The worst that should happen is that she’ll continue to ignore you. At best, she’ll turn off the alarm for the news. The one thing that I’ve learned with Alexa is that you ARE going to do it her way or you’re NOT going to do it at all!!! Good luck!!!

EDIT: You might try when she starts reading off the news to give the command “Alexa Stop”. Since it’s set up as an alarm, you’ll be telling the alarm to stop. It might only stop that segment of the news but you won’t have to listen to it. It’s NOT a permanent fix, but temporary is better than nothing until you can figure it out.

^^Oooooo…both great suggestions jellies, thank you!

@LadyMarissa Unplugging does not work. I also talked to someone whose son supposedly knows one of Amazon’s tech-exec’s children and after being told supposedly some inside info about what Alexa does, quickly ran home and threw away all their Amazon devices. Disturbing.

^^ I did that for a while, but I like having her at times. When she becomes too intrusive, I unplug until I want to listen to some music or need something that I deem important & I plug back in temporarily until I finish my task. Then I unplug again. Mine stays unplugged more often that it is plugged in!!! Why did you say unplugging does not work???

Gosh, and I just have a small AM/FM radio. When I want to listen to the news on the hour I turn it on. No problem.

Just a hunch, but try saying “Alexa, cancel my wake-up routine”. You could also ask “Alexa, what are my routines?” or say “Alexa, disable my morning routine/recurring alarm/flash briefing/start my day routine.”

^^Will try! :)
