What do you know about crows?

Asked by jonsblond (43669points) August 2nd, 2023 from iPhone

Exactly one week ago I found an injured crow in my backyard. It could walk but could not fly. I reached out to a neighborhood Facebook group and within 30 minutes I had someone pick it up. It was 7pm, after the local wildlife center had closed. My neighbor kept the crow overnight until the center opened but unfortunately the crow didn’t make it overnight. Another neighbor who is a bird rescuer took it to bury it in his yard. He said that West Nile is prevalent in our area and killing many birds.

Today is exactly one week and I witnessed something I’m at a loss of words for. I walked to my backyard at almost the exact same time a week ago and found four crows standing right where their injured buddy was. They flew away to my neighbor’s fence and kept an eye on me.

Sometimes a crow that looks sick might be just learning how to fly instead. They have to be fed frequently.

I know a fair amount about crows. They’re very interesting.

Crows show up and hang around when one of them has died. Often more than just four.

I had a good book on corvid intelligence and behavior . . . I don’t see it right now. I might have given it to someone.

Good job trying to help by bringing it to local rehabilitators.

Crows are extremely intelligent and have demonstrated the ability to plan ahead to solve problems, as I understand it.

If you feed them, they will start bringing you gifts…nothing exciting but still a thank you gift. They are extremely intelligent. They appear to have the ability to reason. They can be very loyal.

Crows are opportunists. They are commonly found eating around places with recently disturbed soil. They understand that it’s more likely to have insects exposed.

Additionally. Most birds are very social animals. It’s not impossible that a few crows were observing the process, and saw it eventually buried.

Most likely, in my opinion, one crow started investigating the burial plot, just because it smells like a dead crow/animal. After a short time, other inquisitive crows came over to see what’s so interesting…

^^ But it wasn’t buried in her yard. It was in somebody else’s yard, and the 4 crows a week later were in her yard.

I love having crows around. Crows are talkative. They are noisy around my current apartment in Milwaukee. When I lived in Los Angeles, they played and squawked in the palm trees outside my place. In Chicago, when they roosted in the bare winter trees outside our apartment, they looked like a perfect cover photo for a Edgar Allan Poe book.

My mom tied up some of her plants on a trellis using string with some sailor’s knots, and a crow untied it and took the string (presumably for a nest).

Crows are very social creatures. They also mate for life. I have seen the mate of a crow that got killed hang out next to the body of its mate until the sun went down and then flew away. It is likely the behavior the living crows exhibited was similar to this…one of their murder died so they basically held a vigil for it.

A few years ago (maybe more than a few) , I saw a great documentary on PBS about crows, and it gave me a new appreciation for them. They can remember the faces of people who are kind to them, and the faces of people who are not kind to them, and studies show (as you will see in the documentary) that when the researchers put masks on, the crows still knew who was who by their gait and other traits.

The documentary is called “A Murder of Crows” and it’s online. As you may know, a bunch of crows is called a “murder.” The documentary shows how they will gather to mourn the death of a crow, how they share food, etc.

I try to feed crows when I can. Even if you throw them a piece of a hot dog or something, they appreciate it. They’ll even eat garbage food. I used to bring cereal to work and leave it on the wall int he parking lot, and within minutes a whole bunch of crows would descend on it and it would disappear. One time, after work (when nobody was around because people would get mad when you fed the birds near cars), I put food on the wall near my car and they descended, and there were crows on the rear view mirror and the hood of my car, and I got a few great photos. They will come up close and even will grab food from your hand if you’re calm.
