Where did my 401K go?

Asked by mike6page (1points) February 17th, 2009

The co. I worked for 9 years ago reformed it’s accounts and they don’t know where my 401K went. I tyhink it was with Goldman Sachs but get no help from them either. Is it still retrievable? Of course I’m afraid to give out my SS# and it’s only a small amount but I could sure use it now. Maybe I need a lawyer?

Didn’t you keep any of your annual statements? Did you roll it into your next employer’s plan?

A lot of paperwork got lost since I moved 3 times since then and they’d be about 10 years old. What, maybe find an account #?

Sounds like a mystery is afoot, Sherlock and I are on the case.

Thanks – I guess I’ll dig out the dreaded ‘BOX’ and see if I saved any statements. Funny that I suddenly stopped receiving statement around 2002, huh? You’d think they’d track me down. The Feds can’t touch it so they’re no help.

I would try a reputable government source for finding unclaimed/old accounts. Here is a link to one organization that claims to help, but I am not familiar with it, so I can’t recommend it, but if you contact your local state rep or bank, they should be able to give you a reputable source.
