Social Question

What is your usual role in your group, team, posse?

Asked by NewZen (3502points) October 23rd, 2009

Are you the clown (Am I here to amuse you?); are you the go-to person (I don’t have to know everything – just where to find it?); pehaps you are the quiet one, like me, or maybe you’re the dependable one or the pseudo-social worker?

I am the organizer. Someone having a baby/getting married/reaching a different milestone? Do we need a meeting spot or tickets to something? I’m the one organizing the group gift or the outing and getting annoyed when people don’t cooperate. Strangely enough, I used to be the flake.

Since it consists of me, my dog Katie, and my cat Cecil, I am The Boss.

Honestly, I don’t think I’m any one thing. When I’m new to the group, I’m the quiet one. But then, that’s out the window once I’m comfortable and I can be rather effusive and goofy. I’m definitely comic relief and always have sarcasm or some comment on goings-on and I like making people laugh. People also come to me to talk about problems. When it comes to problem-solving, I’m kind of a McGyver.

I never did fit in with any one clique in school. I usually floated around to different cliques and I think the one thing that made me welcome everywhere was my sense of humor.

I’m the shoulder that everyone cries on.

the dependable one

dpworkin's avatar

every time I see @jonsblond I start to cry.

Firstly @pdworkin I’m LOVING the name Cecil for a cat!

Secondly and probably most improtantly to the question I don’t know what I am in the group. I seem to have a lot of people come to me for advice (usually for things that I really don’t want to give advice about!!!). At school I was the quiet, slightly kooky one. I was never a trend follower but by the same token I never set trends either.

Somehow I’ve put myself in the outspoken leader position who rarely gets the credit or asks for it. I’ve been in many leadership positions by someone asking me to be there. Often I end up being the one leader that speaks up for the minority or for the ‘greater good’ even when that causes backlash against myself personally. And then I organize the other half of things and have others carry it through so they get all the dang credit. Hehe. I don’t mind though as being humble is a skill I am learning throughout my lifetime.

If leadership sounds self-boasting trust me it is not glory-filled in the least.

Recently though, after our loss, we’ve been the “quiet ones”. I kinda like this role better ;)

Go-to, and conceptualist. Very big picture. I can do details, but I’d rather not. Oh, and I’m the tweaker, too. You give me an idea and I’ll say, “Cool, and how about…?”

gemiwing's avatar

I’m usually the one people goto for info or just to have someone look at an issue in a new light.

Other than that, I honestly don’t know what my ‘role’ is…. Everything but the kitchen sink maybe?

jfos's avatar

I’m the one with the biggest…

…leadership qualities.

I’m the organizer. If we go somewhere, I look up how to get there and what to do once we’re there. I’m the responsible one in terms of life things, but I’m also a total lightweight, so my friends like to get me drunk because they think it’s funny, and probably because it’s so antithetical to how I normally act.

I’m also the token gay so if they have any questions about being gay, I get to field those questions. (If I had a quarter for every time I have to answer the question “How do lesbians have sex??” in the past year…)

RedPowerLady's avatar

@fireinthepriory lurve for being a token, i’m often the token “indian” (aka native american) but hubby is even moreso as he looks the part.

Kraigmo's avatar

I’m the quiet one who occasionally interrupts the mindless chit-chat to get back to something more important.

irocktheworld's avatar

I’m the happy and fun person ohh and I’m loud.:) I’m usually the leader but if not,a follower.

NewZen's avatar

@fireinthepriory Then there’s no need for you to check out my question: Am I Gay?~

Axemusica's avatar

I’m the renaissance man. I handle every situation with grace and skill.

fireinthepriory's avatar

@NewZen If you have to ask that question, the answer is always yes. :)

NewZen's avatar

@fireinthepriory I meant it sorta so you’d check it out – it’s an interesting thread of well over a hundred responses: I asked “Am I gay, i.e. me. :-)

fireinthepriory's avatar

@NewZen Ohhh! I mean, uh, I totally knew what you meant… :)

So for some reason I had it in my head that you were a chick, which would make the answer very obvious from the whole sleeps-with-women bit at the beginning of your Q. But whoops! You’re a dude! I make that mistake a lot here on Fluther. FYI, everything you said in your question applies to me, too (except the hemorrhoids and perfume bits) so I’m pretty sure this means that you’re a lesbian. :D Your thread is fabulous, I love me some gay – and some Barbra.

NewZen's avatar

@fireinthepriory You mean… you’re a girl???!!!

fireinthepriory's avatar

@NewZen I know, it’s hard to believe – but I got the boobs to prove it! :)

MissAnthrope's avatar

Hahaha… due to the discussion here, I realized the one niche I fill is I’m always the token lesbian/gay. My friends will even use those words.

fireinthepriory's avatar

@MissAnthrope It ain’t a bad position to fill. :)

MissAnthrope's avatar

@fireinthepriory – Nah, just wish I had more gay friends and a larger dating pool. :P

NewZen's avatar

Get a room, guys..er, no guys will do fine actually.~

fireinthepriory's avatar

@MissAnthrope Amen to that.

@NewZen Amen to that, too! ;)

All of us are in some ways the silly one. Myself included.
I don’t like people to be sad, and will jump and play and laugh with them until they can smile again.

Most of my friends are ex-high school theater/art/dance geeks. They’re all like that.

Silhouette's avatar

Master of Ceremonies. They look to me to get things started.

Poopy's avatar

I am the leader, the go to person, and the clown.
