Is the Data Cable across the Pacific Ocean secure or does it have predators?

Asked by babaji (1448points) March 13th, 2010

The cable across the Pacific ocean is quite a feat in itself, moving data very very fast, but is it secure? Does it have predators, like sharks or the Humboldt Squid, or what about data thieves tapping into it, or even terrorists?

well, fiber optics is quite delicate, but as i understand it the cable has plenty of armor on it.

if anything it going to hurt it i imagine it will be volcanic eruptions, earthquakes and other disaster level events. as for sharks and other animals i doubt they could damage it.

and its probably so deep, that is any terrorist had the capability to reach it, they would also have the capability to mess with us on a much larger scale than underpants bombs and shoes full of explosives.

i imagine to intercept it you will need quite a bit of technology, otherwise all you are going to get is little pretty lights.

International data cables have been and still are effective targets for terrorists. They’re pretty hard to tap in to without someone finding out, but if they were to be severed, a large portion of world connectivity would be cut apart. It would be a great first step in a campaign to divide and conquer the world, piece by piece.

@poisonedantidote : it’s a little naive to think all terrorists are underfunded or underdeveloped. And those cables have to hit shallow water and shoreline somewhere.

They are cut every so often under false pretenses, usually preceding political kerfluffle.

@kevbo : yep – divide, cut off, control. Great way to start proxy wars too if you let the guys you hire get caught.

There is nothing we make that nature cannot claim victory over. The cookie cutter shark makes perfectly round holes in the hulls of submarines. Yeah, I’d definitely say that it has predators.

Nothing can ever be 100% secure.

@lilcoyote : true. security isn’t the act of making something un-stealable or indestructable, it’s the science of making it more expensive to do so than the value of the object or service in question.
