(NSFW) Why are so many men obsessed with boobs?

Asked by KateTheGreat (13640points) May 7th, 2011

Please, explain to me why heterosexual men love them so much. I don’t get it.

Pure conditioning.

They’re kept under wraps all the time, and we get a steady barrage of messages telling us they’re sexual.

Oooh, @KatetheGreat , you used the magic summoning word. Zen should be here soon.

janbb's avatar

Because they’re great; why wouldn’t they be?

I love me some lady pecs. No Hetero

From National Geographic magazines that show pictures of tribes whose women wear no tops, it’s our social setup. I wonder if those women never get their nipples played with? more like, their nipples are like rubber.

thorninmud's avatar

I once read about a group of African women rolling in laughter when told that Western men considered breasts potent sexual objects.

Vunessuh's avatar

That’s not true. I’m obsessed with boobs, too.

Two potential reasons: One is that as a domesticated population of the homo sapiens species, we exhibit behaviors reminiscent of infants. This is common to many domesticated species, where they have certain behaviors in adulthood that normally (in wild populations) fade after adolescence.

Other reason: They’re fun.

Boobs are significant part of the female form. We men are attracted to all different parts of the female form (sounds kinda creepy lol). I don’t care if the woman I am interested in has big or small boobs. A woman with nice boobs is attractive to me but big boobs is not an absolute necessity. I like other features as well and a couple features are more important to me than boob

I know plenty of gay men, straight women, gay women, and people of more fluid genders and sexualities who are pretty obsessed with boobs, too. I can’t blame ‘em. I mean, what’s not to like, really?

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

…....because they’re eye level ;)

cockswain's avatar

I don’t know, but I get a stiffie when I think about them or see them. Speaking of which…

ucme's avatar

Because they are soft & round & squishy & firm & pert & lovely! Said entirely in the voice of a naughty 7yr old boy :¬)

(Drawn away from the swimsuit question) Boobs? Did someone mention boobs? :)

Axemusica's avatar

One day boobs will save the world.

Supposedly it’s all an evolutionary joke and it goes like this… Our closest primate relatives (chimpanzees, bonobos) rely on the buttocks as the place to advertise their sexuality. Then we evolved our upright posture and spent more time communicating to each other face-to-face. Breasts turned out to be a convenient spot to “echo” the buttocks signal on this side not so far away from eye-level. (Of course the original site of interest still retains its potency.)

If this is right, you can blame eons worth of men for them.

Every time I lay my eyes on a bountiful bosom it feels like my birthday.

Gadzooks! Lets get real it is the nipple, boobs without nipple are just mounds; that is why women who do not need to wear bras wear them to disguise the nipple. Seen a woman with pasties? All parts of the boobs is OK to view, the side, the bottom, the top, but not the nipple. For us Yankees, it is the nipple’s allure that make the boobs appealing. Many want to think it has much to do with size but size alone would be nothing without the nipple. A set of firm perky 34Cs with eraser nipples would beat out a set of 38DD with no nipples. Since the US was steeply rooted in Judea/Christian ethics, the naked boob was a source of lusting like the booty and the thighs. Go to parts of rural Mexico you will find small villages mostly Native American descendents, where topless women are not a big ooglefest, are on many South American beaches like Rio, or in Europe. I think it is mostly a US thing predominately. Which is strange since just about everything in this nation swirls around sex. To sell burgers, breath mints, cars, scents, lipstick, etc.

ucme's avatar

Oh & because they tit illate me…..a lot!

FutureMemory's avatar

@Hypocrisy_Central Fact from Fiction, indeed.

Instinct, and it’s not just boobs. Men look for women who are young, healthy, fit, and that have large, full breasts and wide hips because their subconscious is looking for ideal partners to have children with. Breasts provide nourishment for the child, wide hips make child birth easier, and fit, healthy figures contribute to the baby’s growth. It’s all a subconscious drive.

That’s why these traits are tied to sex (reproduction) and are therefore appealing. It’s all tied to reproduction. Why do super models look the way they do? Because they look like they provide the best chances for strong, healthy children.

If you are interested in what Evolutionary Psychology has to say on the subject, Matt Ridley’s The Red Queen is good.

My ex said it was a good thing he didn’t have boobs. He’d just stand around playing with them all the time and wanted to know why women didn’t.

@lucillelucillelucille You must hang out with the Danny DeVito type guys!

It’s cultural conditioning. In North America female breasts are generally taboo, so… what can’t be seen openly (well, pre-Internet and cable TV, anyway) is fetishized, fantasized about and an object of fascination.

In China up until about a hundred years ago it was women’s feet, and the practice of women’s footbinding (practiced by mothers on their young daughters) that made tiny feet so desired and lusted after.

Different cultures, different times, different fantasies and fetishes.

Yeah, I should have changed that to “why are people so obsessed with boobs?”.

What’s not to love? Seriously.

drdoombot's avatar

From a purely rational perspective, it makes no sense to me that I want to smother my face in them and put them in my mouth. But it just feels right.

obvek's avatar

I am totally giving away my sketch comedy idea, but one dead on analogous way to understand how men process environmental boobage is to think about how women react when there is a bouquet of flowers around or someone is receiving flowers. Pay attention to how they cannot not look at them, comment about them, verbalize how they wish the flowers were for them and how lucky the other chick is who is getting flowers or how they cannot help themselves from asking “Are those for me???”

That’s how men feel about boobs. And the why is because they are pretty to look at and they make you want to shove your face in them and breathe in their lovely scent.

KateTheGreat's avatar

@obvek I think that is the best way I have ever heard that described. I think I understand now. Thanks! :)

obvek's avatar

That took about a year and a half of research to figure out.

obvek's avatar

If I’m talking to a woman and holding a bouquet of flowers, I can guarantee you she isn’t looking me in the eyes.

KateTheGreat's avatar

@obvek I object. I hate flowers and they make me sneeze! I don’t like to even look at the things! Now pretty jewelry is a totally different story.

incendiary_dan's avatar

@obvek And plenty of men like flowers. I do. ‘Course, could be because I eat a lot of them.

KateTheGreat's avatar

@incendiary_dan I just visualized you as the human version of Bambi, eating flowers in a meadow. It was pretty funny :P

incendiary_dan's avatar

@KatetheGreat That is how I eat them sometimes. :)

KateTheGreat's avatar

@incendiary_dan Hehehehehe. That makes me giggle a bit too much.

incendiary_dan's avatar

I like the violets especially during this season.

incendiary_dan's avatar

Tasty tasty flower, too! Also, I’ve heard that violet flowers aren’t actually flowers, just something the plant grows. Could be wrong. Either way, I try not to eat more than a third of any patch.

KateTheGreat's avatar

@incendiary_dan I like eating pansies. They’re pretty delicious flowers.

wundayatta's avatar

Ah, the blessed glorious boob! Imagining the heft of a breast in your hands. That soft weight just screaming to be squeezed and licked and manhandled, and oh my god how she screams and wriggles when you do lick her nipple, and she gets wet down below and oh my god, she’s really going wild now….

How could you not be obsessed with boobs?

FutureMemory's avatar

Boobs. Fuck yeah.

SABOTEUR's avatar

All of the above.

faye's avatar

@cbloom8 Super models= wide hips, full breasts, athletic body. Nope.

Response moderated (Spam)
KateTheGreat's avatar

@noelleptc I secretly think that supermodels are aliens in human clothing. If you notice, they are sickly thin and tall. And that’s not normal!

jca's avatar

@KatetheGreat: I was thinking the same thing when I saw what @cbloom8 wrote. Supermodels don’t look healthy nor do they look like they’ll “provide the best chances for strong healthy children.”

janbb's avatar

But supermodels aren’t “designed” to look sexually appealing to men; they are designed to look like what women feel they should look like.

Vunessuh's avatar

I think you guys make some pretty ignorant generalizations about “supermodels”.

cockswain's avatar

oh come on. have a pillow fight.

incendiary_dan's avatar

One time I was working security at an outlet store and a supermodel came in. I know she was a supermodel because her boyfriend wouldn’t stop saying it. I thought her hip was going to poke my eye out. They’re all skeletons. Freaks.

Nullo's avatar

@janbb I heard one theory suggesting that the appearance of the supermodel was actually symptomatic of the relatively high percentage of gay men in the industry, who tend to find less-feminine body shapes attractive.
