Have you ever found yourself attracted to someone completely outside your norm?

Asked by WillWorkForChocolate (23163points) June 29th, 2011

I’ve said several times that if I weren’t happily married, I would ask my daughters’ former gymnastics teacher out on a date. He’s a large (large as in large; I’m not calling him fat) black man. I’m not generally attracted to black men, but he’s got an infectious personality and quite a handsome face.

Have you ever realized that you were physically attracted to someone whom you normally would not be attracted?

What qualities about that person attracted you?

I have no type.

My norm has become anything female with a pulse, so I guess not.

ANef_is_Enuf's avatar

Sure, it happens on occasion. It’s usually the personality that hooks me in those cases. Or some type of physical quirk that may not fit on the list of things that I typically like, but intrigues me because it is unique or endearing.

WillWorkForChocolate's avatar

@ANef_is_Enuf You’re so right about that. Their gymnastics coach has the most bubbly, infectious personality, a great belly laugh and he was sooo good with my daughters. I know it’s mostly his personality that really attracted me, but I found myself thinking how cute he was, and aside from Denzel Washington (lol), I’m not generally attracted to black men. It was just weird to realize, “Hey, I would actually ask him out.”

Large black men are my norm. It was my husband that wasn’t.

Yes I have but it was a long time ago .

My husband was out of my norm. I am, generally, attracted to dark haired middle eastern, indian etc. men. My husband is of Norwegian stock: blond hair, red goatee. But he is funny and that’s what ultimately hooked me.

KateTheGreat's avatar

Definitely. I’m normally attracted to the artsy and quirky guys that happen to be huge nerds at the same time.

My last boyfriend was a very tall and handsome football player. I’m normally not into the “jock” type.

Why would you “not generally” be attracted to any specific race?

You say that he has a great personality; that is the most attractive trait a person can have!

In my experience, people can make or break their “physical” appearance the moment they open their mouth. Good-natured people always seem more attractive than the bottom-feeders.

As far as i’m aware, I have no family members named Norm & if I did i’m fairly certain I wouldn’t fancy him.
There was this Russian lady shot putter I saw on telly recently, man her thighs could crack walnuts.

redfeather's avatar

Yep. Once in a while I’m checking out the 6’4” gangly, freckle faced gingers. They usually aren’t my “type”

WillWorkForChocolate's avatar

@rOs Because I’m just not. It’s a weird quirk of mine. I can count on one hand, the number of black men I have ever found attractive. Just an odd personal preference I guess.

bob_'s avatar

@Simone_De_Beauvoir Damn, now that’s what I call completely outside the norm.

Once, in high school, I was attracted to a guy, who, in retrospect, was probably a sociopath. What I was attracted to about him was that he wasn’t a goodie-goodie and would tell adults off and dare them to punish him if he was wrong about what he was saying.

In those days, I was a milquetoast who would cower in fear at an adult’s raised voice, and would go somewhere and cry if an adult even raised their voice at someone else’s antics.

It sure wasn’t the boy’s looks, he had pretty much a cube for a head and was built like Fred Flintstone. He wasn’t nice to anyone else, either, including me. Thank goodness that was the only time, though.

Yes, see my avatar

“Marwyn”, the worlds sexiest gander.
2.5 feet tall in his bare flappys, stunning orange face, amazing blue eyes, beautiful voice, and worships the ground I walk on. He loves it when I kiss his knob. lolol

bob_'s avatar

His knob? 0.o

athenasgriffin's avatar

I don’t think I’ve found my type yet.

But sometimes it does surprise me when I go for really tall guys. My type is generally between 5’6’’ and 5’10’’ but then, out of the blue, I develop a huge crush on a guy over 6ft.

I’m short (5’3’’), so really tall guys are hard to kiss. Even in heels.

Coloma's avatar

@bob_

Yes, a gooses bulging forehead is called a knob.
Hows your knob, Bob? lol

OpryLeigh's avatar

Before I fell for him I wouldn’t have thought my boyfriend was my type. I used to go for the rocker/biker types and my boyfriend is clean shaven with very little hair (I used to love a man with long hair). He’s a casual dresser and, whilst he does ride a motorbike, he can’t be described as Rock n Roll. Despite all this, he’s the sexiest man alive to me.

Jude's avatar

@bob_ I can see bob’s knob.

erichw1504's avatar

Outside my norm would be men.

So, no.

Jude's avatar

Now that I think about it, at one time I was into chicks like this (atsy farsty girls.).

Now, I am into science nerds who have butch mannerisms, and large titties..

Also, I was really into Hispanic women and East Indian women. Now, I am into gingers.

I used to be submissive and into older women. Now, I’m definitely domme and I’m into women around my own age or slightly younger. Who’s your Daddy?

WillWorkForChocolate's avatar

@Jude LOL! My hubby once jokingly said “Who’s your daddy?” while we were in bed, so I rolled over on top of him, playfully slapped his cheek and said “Who’s my pretty bitch?” and refused to ride him until he said, “I’m your pretty bitch.” It’s become an awesome joke between us now.

Facade's avatar

I just wanted to say that anyone who isn’t attracted to large Black men is out of their mind!
And, my SO is pretty much outside of my “norm.” But I think that’s what makes it special.

WillWorkForChocolate's avatar

@Facade I’m not sure why I’m not, I’m just usually not. I’m not generally attracted to Middle Eastern men either, except for this one man from Iran who has to be about 50. For whatever reason, I totally dig him.

TexasDude's avatar

I usually like older women who are artsy and sophisticated, but I went through a phase where I liked 19 year old girls with ADD for a while, for some reason. It was nearly the death of me.

Facade's avatar

@WillWorkForChocolate It’s cool. More for me =)

bob_'s avatar

@Fiddle_Playing_Creole_Bastard They never get tired, do they?

Jude's avatar

OT – With men, the guys have always been pretty and gentle.

bob_'s avatar

OT? You mean OJ?

erichw1504's avatar

OJ? You mean OD?

Jude's avatar

Haha. Off topic. I wasn’t exactly answering chocolate’s question.

TexasDude's avatar

@bob_ sounds like you speak from experience.

bob_'s avatar

@Fiddle_Playing_Creole_Bastard A gentleman has no memory.

OpryLeigh's avatar

@WillWorkForChocolate I don’t think it is strange that you are generally not physically attracted to certain ethnicities/race. I don’t usually find myself attracted to very white/pale/fair people (male or female) and usually go for darker skin/features (my boyfriend did fit that preferance well). I’m sure most people, if forced to choose, would prefer the look of one race/ethnicity over another and that’s fine.

FutureMemory's avatar

I always go for brunettes with big tits and tattoos. Hair color though doesn’t matter to me, nor the tattoos. Can’t see myself ever giving up the funbags though…

FutureMemory's avatar

@erichw1504 Pretty much. I ain’t complaining.

Facade's avatar

Yay tittays!

jonsblond's avatar

I’ve always like guys with dark hair who were musically talented, so being attracted to an older, graying politician like Bill Clinton is completely outside of the norm for me. ;)

stardust's avatar

I don’t have a type as such. I find lots of men attractive and it’s not always based on personality. However, personality is more important to me in general so I understand where you’re coming from about the infectious personality @WillWorkForChocolate

WillWorkForChocolate's avatar

@FutureMemory Wait… I’m a brunette. And I’ve got 8 tattoos now. And big… ummmm you get the idea!

FutureMemory's avatar

@WillWorkForChocolate Your husband is a lucky man ;)

redfeather's avatar

@FutureMemory am I your type? ;) lol

King_Pariah's avatar

I normally go for females, they all have something in common but I can’t put my thumb on it. One time, I met a girl, she had that thing that all girls that attract me have, turned out she was a shemale. I was like, eh, whatever, and a passionate weekend of screwing ensued.

Blackberry's avatar

Ive always been attracted to gothic women. I find them fascinating.

Blondesjon's avatar

Only @gailcalled.

FutureMemory's avatar

@redfeather You know you are :)
