Who was the longest friend you've had?

Asked by The_Inquisitor (3163points) January 14th, 2010

I’m just wondering, who was the longest friend you’ve had? Right now, I’d say starting from grade 9 till now (grade 12) for me.

From elementary school, I didn’t keep in contact with anybody. The majority went to another high school, and I followed where my sister went. It’s the biggest and best in my city, and I’m glad I didn’t follow everyone else, I never realized how messed up they were.

I’m more curious about the people who have finished schooling once and for all. How many of your friends are you still in contact with that were your high school buddies? Maybe your longest and close friend you’ve had was someone you met in university?

There is one couple from my college years (30+) and another from my first year out of college. The three people who know me the best and whom I trust totally.

My friend Paul and I have been friends since 6th grade. He and I now go to Stanford together.

My best friend Alicia and I have been friends since 7th grade. Still friends with her to this day.

I’m also still friends with a girl from Las Vegas that I’ve known since 1st grade. I’m not as close to her as I am to many other friends (simply because I just don’t see her as often), but I still consider her a friend and I do still hang out with her. We just never lost connection, even after I moved away.

Her name is Rashell. We’ve been best friends since second grade. We’re both 39 now. I’ll let you do the math. :)

Also, a couple of years, perhaps.

Probably my friend Zack. I was fifteen when I met him and I am 32 now. We live in different states now and barely ever talk but I would give him a hug if we ran into each other. I consider him a friend.

It sounds like you have the stupid ass high school mentality that “OMFG” Cindy wants to hang out with someone other than me tonight… OMFG.. Not friends anymore.

The_Inquisitor's avatar

@johnpowell, what makes you think that?—about the high school mentality thing

jrpowell's avatar

It just sounds like you think it is all or nothing.

sjmc1989's avatar

@johnpowell I know what your saying. I think a true friend is someone you can not speak to in years and when you see them it is like you’ve never lost contact. I have people I consider friends that I haven’t talked to in years, but they are still considered friends because I know if I ever really needed them, they would try their hardest to help me.

The_Inquisitor's avatar

@johnpowell, oh, I see, umm, well, one of my close friends I’ve known since I was born. I guess I just didn’t count those other years because I hadn’t been in contact since pre-school, and then saw her again in grade 9.

lol, I guess you kinda proved your point. A bit too exaggerated with the example though. Maybe I haven’t lived long enough. I know that distance shouldn’t mean anything, but through my high school life, I’ve pretty much seen them everyday. Of course I don’t hang out with them everyday though. We do have different friends too.

I was an oil company brat – we moved almost every year. As a result I have very few long-time friends. Perhaps the longest was my friend Catherine. I met her in 1985 and we stayed friends until she died in 2006. Also, there was my friend Alda. I met her in 1985 also, but she died in 2004 at the age of 94. And currently there is my friend Gwen, whom I met in 1989. She is still alive and doing well.

Bear in mind that once I got my first “real” job back in 1985 I have lived in the same town since that time. Prior to that I was moving with my family, or moving due to school and field research projects, and many of my friends did the same. I rarely knew anyone face to face for more than a year or two.

And actually, my longest friend measured 76 inches from head to toe, or toe to head.

I have known my friend Suha since summer 1990. Our 20 year anniversary is coming up hehe. She just had her first baby a couple of weeks ago, an adorable little girl :-) I am now someone’s wacky aunt!!

She lived with her family in the same building as my grandmother. One time she was playing with her siblings outside, and a thief grabbed the gold bracelets they had on. They were OK, a bit bruised and shaken. My grandma took me with her to pay them a visit, and the rest is history!

of course there are other friends that I’ve technically known longer, but she’s one of my closest friends and we are in regular contact despite the distance

My best bud T.E., 38 years, since we were 12. I moved across the country with him I stayed in Davis, CA and he went on to SF. I moved back to South Eastern WI, he moved back to MN, then Northern WI and to this day, despite the distance and his being married with 3 kids and my having 2 kids there is nothing I wouldn’t do for the guy or I know I couldn’t count on him for.

Wow.

I have a male friend that is like a brother to me. We were born four days apart in the same hospital. Our mothers talked to each other while in the hospital and we were in the same nursery. We lived a block away from each other. When we started kindergarten, our mothers had a carpool.

We went to kindergarten, grade school, high school together and were close friends. He went to a rival university…but we still saw each other on breaks and sometimes during the semester…especially if he needed help writing a paper. :)

He was best man at my wedding (defunct many years ago). We have been separated by a continent and now an ocean, but he is one of my closest and dearest friends still. We talk once or twice weekly on the phone. We laugh, we cry…we are silly and serious and just ridiculous…at times.

So, I’ve had one close friend for all of my life, really.

And I’m not telling you how long that is. :)

I have friends that I’m pretty close to now…I met them while in grade school, probably kindergarten or first grade. We were close then, but I moved…we had different crap happen. But, thanks to the internet we’ve kept in contact and now hang out whenever we want. Oh and regarding the internet…it helps me keep contact with many people I’ve known since kindergarten. There are a lot of facebook friends whom I see in person every so often, who I have known almost all my life. People like my first boyfriend, who I met when I was 5, we dated at 14, and still talk and enjoy each others company.
My best friend has been my good friend since I was…hmm, I was either 14 or 15 when I met her. Probably 15. We met in HS, and would hang out after school..not super close. But then we both dropped out around the same time, and got our GEDs together, and both started different college paths, and were extremely close during all of this. We supported each other emotionally, as we both had to go to college and work full time at 16. She was my maid of honor. I don’t see her often enough (she hates the suburbs and I can’t stand being in the city for extended periods.), but we make it work.

I met my best friend Jessica when I was in 5th grade (about 11 years ago.) Unfortunately, this past 6 months we’ve severely grown apart, but we were inseparable for years.

@Sunshine2u Aw, I love you. :)

I met my best friend Jerry on the first day of kindergarden. That was Sept, 1961.
Jerry and I have had times when we were not friends, as people do.

Kind of long situation here: Ive known my best friend i guess you can say since birth. My grandmother and his grandmother both lived in the same building for years, my mother then became friends with his mother and went to school together, i went to preschool with him and spent almost all my summers at his house. Ive known him literally my whole life. Everyone in my family considers his family part of ours and vice versa, most of my cousins introduce him as part of our family.

Met my closest friend in college in 22 years ago. I was friends in high school with a guy I probably met the day we were born. Our mothers shared a room at the hospital.

This is Crystal and Christine and we have been best friends our entire lives, which is 24 years. We were born 5 days apart in the same hospital and our moms had a joint baby shower. Beat that!
