In need of a community project idea for high school senior?

Asked by autumnsunset (289points) October 12th, 2010

My son, who is a high school senior, needs to do some community work as part of his senior year curriculm. Does anyone have any interesting/unique “teen boy” ideas? It would be nice to maybe make some things at home on his spare time and then donate the items somewhere.

Is there a Habitat for Humanity project in your area? That would be a great idea.

hard to know as ‘communities’ vary greatly in the USA….. Perhaps a bit more description…. very urban…. small country town…...... ???

Start an all-out anti bullying campaign for the undergrads (especially freshmen) in his school. This could be a legacy he would leave for all who follow. If you could just boost one kid’s self esteem or keep one kid from growing up emotionally crippled, it would be worth it. Have the “cool” kids look after their not so cool brethren. God would smile…

Could set up a garden or something in public space, would require public government approval and probably a plan for after he stops caring for the garden.

Could make a solar panel or wind turbine (obviously on a small scale) and donate it to the school, actually not very hard to do or very expensive.

Could paint a mural on public property in honor of something. Would again require local government approval, but has benefit of not really needing any upkeep once he’s done.

Could host some kind of canned food drive for donation to a charity.

Good luck.

Is he good with computers? Perhaps he could tutor senior citizens and retirement homes or other venues.

Oh i’m doing the same thing.
Well he can go to a retirement home, or at a hospital, a dog shelter, or at the fire department, or police station.
As for me i’m going to volunteer at school.

There has got to be a camp or park in need of picnic tables. They are not all that hard to build and always appreciated where they are needed.

If he likes chemistry and crafts, making soap from lye and oils and donating the soap to shelters of all kinds could be fun. If you are in the US, the labelling laws are very liberal, as it has it’s own category… you don’t’ have to get fancy, just label it ‘soap’ . You can do it in your own kitchen with no special equipment. If you are interested, I can send you some links.

Thank you everyone for your ideas. The soap idea is a possibility. I have made soap before and we have a men’s shelter which is always in need of soap. The picnic table is another good idea but I will have to look into cost. Cazzie, we are a small town (about 2500 people), it is very country. Any other ideas???

Since you are interested in the soap idea, it’s worth contact local hotels for the used soap bars left behind. They can be boiled and reused. Plus, it saves them from going into landfills. The hotels also have tons of bedding and towels that can no longer be used, but are still in decent shape. And, many hotels replace their mattresses every 4–8 years.

ICk…. don’t ‘reprocess’ used soap. YUCK. is that what you mean? I don’t think that would even be legal. Not even in the US.

@cazzie Here is a link to a project on used soap.

OK… it says this soap is ‘sanitized’ but it doesn’t say how. I don’t think I would do this at home. It is so strange, they have everything in Africa they need to make soap themselves, and I know of several soapmakers who have gone over there to show communites and set up soapmaking ventures with them. My palm, coconut and shea butter all come from Africa… seems SOOO strange that soap needs to be shipped there. Like, ice to Inuit. They should show them how to make the soap and sell it to the hotels. ;o)

@autumnsunset But you are in a small town… not a lot of big hotels around… so, what about a community garden? Wrong time of year, unless you live in the South and could plant winter veg. In these times, fresh veg delivered to a local food bank would be very appreciated, I’m sure. He could also do a canned food drive, perhaps.

Canned food drive sounds possible. We do have a food pantry in town and they can always use the donations.
