Have you ever written a fan letter?

Asked by SuperMouse (30845points) July 16th, 2013

Who was it written to? Did you hear back?

Way back in high school I wrote to Jack Wagner who at the time was playing Frisco on General Hospital. I got a pre-printed postcard inviting me to spend money to join his fan club. I remember being thoroughly disgusted. After that I swore off fan letters. A couple of years ago my oldest was asked to write to an author he liked for a school assignment. My son picked Michael Chabon who took the time to hand write a note to the boy. I felt a slight hint of jealousy at the response.

Not exactly a fan letter, but I wrote a letter to an author that I really like, Anne B. Ross, who wrote the Miss Julia Series because I had very vivid images of who I thought should play her characters if her books were they ever made into a movie. She wrote back and was very thoughtful and seemed to enjoy that I had actually chosen specific actors.

I also wrote to another author that I like, Nancy Thayer, about her Hot Flash Club Series and got a similar response. I had all of the main characters figured out, by what actors would play them. She was very sweet in her response.

I also wrote to Michael Nesmith of the 60’s era musical group The Monkees, when one of his songs, “Mary Mary” was sampled (IMO illegally) in the 1980’s. I sent him a copy of the record and he signed it, thanked me for my concern and mailed it back to me : )

Like @Kardamom, I wrote to an author to ask him about his writing and research process. He very kindly wrote back. I told him I like his books. I suppose I was a fan.

Not quite, but I did write a letter to a video game magazine, called Play. It was about video game violence, and I got letter of the month, and so they printed it in the magazine. I was pretty surprised.

Not exactly a fan letter, but I did write a letter to Teen Vogue. Told them their recent (early 90’s) article about how Converse shoes were in style now was totally stupid. They’re classic shoes that are always in style, not because some teeny bopper magazine decided to bring them back. I was surprised they printed my letter—an abridged version anyway.

I wrote to Kylie Minogue when I was 8. I figured that she must get loads of mail, so I thought if I sent something ‘different’ it would stand out to her and she would do it. I asked her to come round for tea and told her we could watch Neighbours together after. She didn’t reply. My mum said she would have loved to have come round for tea, but there were too many kids that lived on our street, and she didn’t want to be mean to them.

No, but I do send tweets to famous folks I admire, last one congratulating Andy Murray on his historic Wimbledon win.
Kind of a modern day version of the fan letter…sorta.

I’ve gone all fanboy over this lovely historian who inspired my research…Wrote her a couple of emails, then she invited me to have coffee with her in Paris last summer… does that count? :D

I wrote a funny letter to Dean Koontz a while back and actually got a response, saying he thinks I have a fabulous sense of humor. I didn’t go overboard and frame it, but I do keep it with other special papers, haha!

Duuuude. You got a response from Dean Koontz? Kay, you know how much ass that kicks? :)

I know!!! I received one of those standard “Hey, Mr. Koontz is incredibly busy on his new novel at the moment, but he deeply appreciates your letter blah blah blah…” letters, but with a handwritten paragraph at the bottom, referencing some of the things I’d said and saying how fabulous my sense of humor is! Dean Koontz told me I’m funny!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sorry. I get a little overexcited about that. He’s my favorite author and I think he’s absolutely hilarious.

Nah, it’s awesome. Never wrote a letter to Stephen King, I figure, he’ll probably never even see it. Dean Koontz is on the same level as King, so it’s just so cool that he responded. Also, I’m currently reading a Koontz book. :D (The Taking)

@Symbeline Stephen King would love you! You could actually be a character in a Stephen King novel. You should write to him and see if he responds. Maybe you could write it in your own blood LOL.

I used to write loads when I was a kid. I got a few autographs back from various people. I wrote to my favourite British actress at the time (Sallyanne Law – she was in a children’s TV show on the BBC when I was about 12 years old) and got a letter back which made my whole year!!

My favourite author is Michael Connelly. I emailed him once, and his PA replied on his behalf. I replied saying I was looking forward to his new book coming out. Think it was going to be released here 3 months after it did in the US. His PA emailed me out the blue and said I could order a book and that Michael said he would sign it. He wrote, To Leila, all the best from Harry Bosch and I. Was pretty chuffed with that.
