Does anyone have personal experience with the prescription drug Topamax?

Asked by Adirondackwannabe (36713points) October 2nd, 2013

I was given a prescription for Topamax due to headaches from a concussion. What I looked up online scares the heck out of me. The side affects are nasty. Anyone dealt with this stuff? I’m inclined to deal with the headaches and stay away from this one. I know, this isn’t a medical site, but I was just looking for real life information.

Every medication has side effects. Take the drug and if you get an unacceptable side effect go back to the doctor to see if there is another one you tolerate better.

@Adirondackwannabe Side effect only impact SOME people, take it and be prepared to go back to Dr if you suffer from side effects.

I was on it for a while, and it nearly gave me glaucoma, apparently. That said, you should give it a go. Every drug does have side effects, and you won’t know if you’ll experience them until you try it. You have to look at the potential benefit-to-harm ratio.

I just googled it. That’s quite the list of side effects. I understand your concern, but don’t they have to list side effects even if only a couple of people have experienced them?
I’d give it a try and see how your body handles it. Migraines are nasty business.
My son gets them a few times a year and he’s down for a couple of days. My fiancĂ© gets a few a month and he’s miserable.

Let us know how it goes!

I’m going to hold off on it for now. I can deal with the headaches. I know I don’t want to deal with the side affects at all. There’s a lot more downside than upside. In a few months I might re- consider but for now I’ll deal with it.

Follow up: Over the past weekend I was talking with my family and the headaches came up in the discussion. My S-I-L has been taking Topamax for a while for migraines and she loves it. No problems at all. I didn’t take it, but yesterday I had my first headache free day since May. Thanks for you input guys!

Fingers crossed you have many more headache free days!
That’s great to hear @Adirondackwannabe

@Adirondackwannabe I worked with a guy thirty years ago and sometimes twice a month we would have to drive him home. His migraines were so bad he couldn’t open his eyes, the light hurt that much.
He got rid of them about ten years later; right after his divorce, never had another migraine.

@Tropical_Willie These weren’t migraines but they were pretty nasty at times. Sounds like his migraine source slept next to him.:)
