General Question

I want to buy a winter coat that'll be my go-to for years or even decades. Given the following guidelines, what would you suggest?

Asked by Josephmartin (7points) November 18th, 2015

-No more than $400
-Slim-fit
-Charcoal preferred, navy considered, maaaaybe black if I was otherwise BANANAS over it
-No hood
-Prefer a substantial collar good for turning up in bad weather
-Not double-breasted, unless it’s a pea coat
-Prefer more traditional styles like pea coat or overcoat, don’t want anything super-formal

Thanks so much for any guidance!

It depends on the weather conditions where you live, your body shape, and whether you want something nice or functional.

Sounds like you would like The Quarter Century Jacket

Welcome to Fluther.

You seem to be looking for some kind of dress coat, a thing for which I have very little use. I prefer durability before good looks (although I do like good-looking clothing, as long as it is durable first), which is why I went with a Carhartt for my last-until-the-end-of-my-life coat.

Both of the coats linked t oabove seem more causal than what you might be looking for. My sons good good coats – one a charcoal pea coat and the other a ¾ length overcoat from JCrew and Johnson and Murphy. Check them out online. A duffle coatBing_Mens_Apparel_PLA_Nautica7762305942___mkwid_2liL7jjQ_7762305942%7C%7C2liL7jjQ might work for you. (Link workd even though it’s displaying oddly.)

Why not buy two, $200 coats and then you’ll have two choices for a bit of variety and they will wear twice as long if decades of wear is something you really aspire to Personally I’d get bored wearing the same coat for 10 or 20 years. haha

@Josephmartin

Are you looking for a man’s or woman’s coat? (This is the Internet. We can’t assume your preference just by your screen name.)

Where do you live? How cold does it get there? How cold will it be where you travel? What warmth are you expecting? (In some locations, a light jacket worn over a sweater is warm enough. Other areas require a parka.)

Can you explain what you mean by slim-fit? (I’m familiar with slim-fit shirts and skinny pants, but not coats. Coats are made to go over bulky sweaters and such, and they don’t seem slim to me.)

For what it’s worth, click here to see my favorite heavy coat. It doesn’t meet your criteria since it has a hood, but it is a fine coat.

I have a single breast, wool, black, long coat that I have had for ten years. I think I paid $180 on sale in January. Men’s coats are sometimes a little more pricey. Also, waiting for a sale can mean you don’t wind up with your first choice. My collar can be buttoned all the way up, or left open as a typical collar. I love it.

Where do you live? Do you have Bloomingdale’s near you? They tend to carry a nice quality brand. Macy’s will be more all over the map depending on where you live. They adjust their selection for the demographics of the area. If you are in a very cold climate where you have to walk at times I say go long. It makes a huge difference, especially in windy days.

One thing about slim fit: Unless you stay slim, it might not fit for decades.

Coloma's avatar

@jca Haha, maybe they need to have a line of “expando fit.” lol

How about something like This, a mens herringbone wool blend bibbed walking coat?

I bought a pea coat and a top coat both from Brooks Brothers. Pea coat was $360 and the top coat was $950

@johnwodden Well, you should be well covered then.
