There is still flu out there. Have you gotten your flu shot?

Asked by Rarebear (25192points) March 2nd, 2016

We have two patients in the intensive care unit and 5 patients in the hospital with H1N1 flu. The current wave is very bad. Did you get your flu shot yet?

Thanks for the alert, @Rarebear

I got my annual flu shot last fall. Is that sufficient or do I need another?

Why “wars” and “flame” in your tags?

chyna's avatar

I got mine.

I got one during our flu season, and I haven’t had the flu.

jca's avatar

Nope. I had Guillain Barre so I can’t get it.

No…not this time. The H1N1 strain they used in the vaccine is from California 2009 and I expect near everyone was exposed to H1N1 during that 2009 epidemic and since I did not get sick that time around I feel I have a solid chance to have immunity to the H1N1 strain that is circulating and the shot would not afford any assistance I don’t already have. The other strain in the vaccine is H3N2 and only 342 cases have resulted in the last 4 years with only 16 fatalities and most of those deaths had severe underlying medical issues/compromised immune systems that probably resulted in secondary infections. I am pretty healthy for my age and those odds of getting infected are nowhere near the level that would motivate me to get the shot. I think the pneumo vax is a much more sound elective for us older folks.

Just to be clear I am making this choice because I am healthy with no underlying health issues. If anyone is elderly and or has any kind of health issues especially one that beat up your immune system than the Flu vax should be on your to do list.

Got it. Thanks, RB.

@Cruiser If you didn’t catch the H1N1 specific strain (get sick from it) and weren’t vaccinated for it ever, probably you shouldn’t feel so sure you’re immune. I’m not lecturing or pushing for the vaccine, I didn’t get vaccinated either, I just think maybe you shouldn’t feel so safe if that’s why you haven’t bothered to get vaccinated. That one my still be available as a single, I’m not sure.

@jeruba because every time I post about it someone invariably tells me how full of shit I am either on list or by PM.

But whatevs. Yes, if you got your flu shot earlier this year it should be good. I didn’t get a new one.

Jeruba's avatar

Not by me, @Rarebear. As I told you once, you are one of the few posters whose comments I read without skepticism.

I always do.

janbb's avatar

Yes, I got one in the late Fall.

I do every other year or so, both this year and last this go around. I have been skeptical of them in the past but not as much now. I still think it’s a money making scheme but even if there is a small chance it will keep me from getting sick I’m on board

LuckyGuy's avatar

Yep! I got mine. I always do. I figure I’m helping those who don’t.

Tried to, but I had to be put on antibiotics and they said I’d have to make a separate appointment after the course was over. Haven’t gotten around to it yet.

Got mine in Nov. no flu here just a lovely bout, of what I think is Pancreatitis this week. Seeing my doc tomorrow. No more wine and rich dinners for me, getting old sucks. lol

zenvelo's avatar

Yep, got mine back in October. Kids got theirs, too.

Months ago. I was the sacrificial bull so that my grand-daughter would get hers without balking.

hope it is still good.

johnpowell's avatar

Nope.. I don’t think I have ever gotten a flu shot. My immune system is on par with Charlie Sheen’s.

@Jeruba Oh, I know it’s never you. You just asked, so I answered. In terms of my comments, I always try to stay factual. A person is entitled to their own opinion, but not their own facts.

Back in September of 2015, had H1N1 in 1957. The Doctor thought I had contracted Polio and Rheumatic fever. Temp peaked at 105.6* F.

tedibear's avatar

Yes. I got mine in the fall.

Thank you to all who got their flu shot. I didn’t get one. I guess it’s not important to me. I haven’r had the flu since December 31, 1979.
