Should we have a fourth posting category?

Asked by ARE_you_kidding_me (20021points) May 10th, 2020

We have general for general questions, social for chatting and meta for administrative. So… should we have a “politics and religion” section so a few people can go to war and not pollute the rest of Fluther?

I like your idea but why limit it to just those two subjects?
May I suggest “The Offense & Annoyance Emporium” ?:D

RedDeerGuy1's avatar

Yes. For now I suggest a tab. Like NSFW. I suggest (P&R). For politics and religion.

ucme's avatar

I would put in a cuckoo’s nest category for obvious reasons.
I feel more & more like Jack every day!

janbb's avatar

How about calling it “The Argument Clinic”?

SavoirFaire's avatar

@ARE_you_kidding_me Is there a reason people can’t just avoid those questions, or are you saying that those questions are cluttering up the other sections?

@janbb But would we get paid, or are we just supposed to be arguing in our spare time?

“Tin hats and aluminum foil lovers”

ARE_you_kidding_me's avatar

@SavoirFaire This question is of course tongue and cheek but yes, it can get bad enough to obscure entire sections, especially recently. Sometimes I even get sucked into it.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@ARE_you_kidding_me Nah, we just need to post more Questions about other countries to balance it out better, in my opinion. There’s a lot going on in the world that we never discuss here at all, we just seem to focus on the US, for good or ill.
We had a little fun with Brexit, but we never really seem to get into the ‘meat’ of issues outside the US and debate or argue them well.

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@KNOWITALL -That category would be called “Fantasy Land” ...the place where you’re allowed to insult your children. ;)

SQUEEKY2's avatar

@KNOWITALL Feel free to point out all and any of Canada’s faults, might agree or disagree.
Problem with the states is a lot of your policies affect other countries for better or worse.
Especially when your Don Father starts needless trade wars via his beyond stupid tariffs.
I mean his idiotic tariffs are even hurting American companies but you fright wingers refuse to see it.
As for a politic and religion catagory wouldn’t matter because some people even though it gets them upset HAVE to add their two cents regardless.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@SQUEEKY2 haha, it’s not just Canada, I promise. Like Japan’s 700% import tariff on rice, many countries policies affect the other countries, so I agree with you.

It just seems to me we neglect discussions of other countries. I’d like to see more of those intellectual questions as opposed to ‘what’s your favorite fruit’-type questions. haha!

Darth_Algar's avatar

@KNOWITALL

That’s probably because the majority of people here are from the US. If the majority were from, say, Switzerland, then I’d expect to see more discussions about Swiss issues rather than American ones.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@Darth_Algar Of course you’re right. I thought jellies on this site had wider intellectual interest in the outside world, I suppose.

filmfann's avatar

Cool! We could call it Federated.

Soubresaut's avatar

Haven’t been here for a while. Is it still a practice to ask people involved in a tangent discussion to make a new question for that discussion, or has that not been working?

KNOWITALL's avatar

@Soubresaut No we still do that.

If I had to guess, I’d say the poster is referring to the constant barrage of Trump-bashing questions posted by the same people over and over. It’s the same people posting and the same people answering the same things. I guess they think it’s funny, but it’s really just annoying flamebait. And yes, I’d say that if they were bashing anyone for the 5000th time.

ARE_you_kidding_me's avatar

^^Correct, and since they can’t seem to help themselves why not give them a place.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@ARE_you_kidding_me Ha, I second your motion then, because yes, they are a cry for attention or lurve, not sure which. :D

It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it.

Darth_Algar's avatar

@KNOWITALL

Or perhaps they don’t feel as qualified to discuss such things. How well versed are you on the internal politics of Switzerland?

If you feel you are well versed enough in the politics of another country then by all means, feel free to start a thread about it.

SQUEEKY2's avatar

@KNOWITALL there was an excellent video on You Tube about Switzerland about Covid19 if I stumble back on it I will post the link or look for it.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@Darth Glad you posted that, actually. I feel the exact same.
@SQUEEKY2 Sure why not.

SavoirFaire's avatar

While many jellies may have a wide intellectual interest in the outside world, they may not all focus on the same areas of the world. So even if someone here feels qualified to discuss the nuances of Swiss politics, the lack of overlap between their knowledge and the knowledge of someone well versed in Egyptian politics makes it harder to get a conversation going.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@SavoirFaire Anythings better than another four years of ‘me hate Trump’ threads.

janbb's avatar

@KNOWITALL I think the way to eliminate that will be to vote him out of office. Pfft!! The Trump threads will be gone! Then we can go back to “me hate Biden” threads from other people.

ARE_you_kidding_me's avatar

@janbb I’d bet they’ll stick for quite a while after.

janbb's avatar

^^ I just ignore them at this point. Nobody is going to change anyone’s mind either way.

SQUEEKY2's avatar

AS much as I don’t want to I will agree with @ARE_you_kidding_me the Trump bashing will be here for a while after, but the Don Father has done it all to himself with his hate fill rhetoric, his countless gaffes, and thousands upon thousands of lies, that his loyal base have to rush in and defend.
Heck I still see Obama bashing 4 years after, so I can expect to see Trump Bashing for some time to come, although if he loses the election it will cut way down.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@SQUEEKY2 I hope you are able to assert yourself here about Biden, as you feel you are with Trump. That should be fun.

SQUEEKY2's avatar

Hey if he acts half as arrogant or stupid I will trash him as well, although I really doubt we will see him give the wealthy a 1.25 trillion dollar tax cut.

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@SQUEEKY2-Biden admitted that he was aware that they asked for an investigation of Micheal Flynn when he’d previously stated that he knew nothing about those moves to investigate him.
Have at it ;)

KNOWITALL's avatar

@lucillelucillelucille You’re awesome. Without even knowing your political leanings, it’s so refreshing to find others who see both sides of the coin.

SQUEEKY2's avatar

I am not crazy about Biden, and any crime he may have committed should be investigated , at least he doesn’t spew hate filled rhetoric at every press meeting, and any gaffes should be laughed at as much as the Don Father.

ARE_you_kidding_me's avatar

…and the inevitable. Here we go, do we need anymore evidence into this matter.

Soubresaut's avatar

But isn’t the example here of someone who says they dislike what they call “Trump bashing” inviting others to compare Trump and Biden? And is it only the comments that are against Trump that are the problem, or all of the comments that respond to that opening in the conversation?

ARE_you_kidding_me's avatar

@Soubresaut It’s the intrusion of this banter into any and every conversation we have on this site. I could have let this go a little longer and the non-F*ck Trumpers would show up and circle around the F*ck Trumpers spreading the perpetual circle-J spiral of doom into infinite oblivion.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@ARE_you_kidding_me Just for the record, I try hard to skip those questions, but as you say, they bring it into other threads so often so we can’t ignore the constant regurgitation of negativity and low brow insults.

Soubresaut's avatar

Thank you. I wanted to clarify that your point isn’t about people on one side of the argument (since another person above has only mentioned dislike of one side of this particular topic), but rather the pattern of people falling into already well-tread discussions.

At least for me, I think some of the reason this happens is that people expand threads that could otherwise remain focused on narrower topics, and instead of it being about a specific topic that may plausibly fall within the larger umbrella of “Trump/Trump’s presidency,” it just becomes generically about “Trump’s presidency” (both critique and defense), and with the broadened topic comes a lot of repeated points.

I think there was a shorter way to word that, but I don’t know what it is right now. Is that what you’re talking about?

Patty_Melt's avatar

Well, I think many things to talk about other than politics, whatever country we choose to discuss. I do have one political thin to add, but I don’t expect many to agree with me.
I think whether Trump gets another four years or not, the next one to be president after him should be indigenous.
Ha! Then watch the boats and planes get loaded for deportations!!!

SQUEEKY2's avatar

I love that^^ and make it better an Indigenous woman, that would be the best.

Patty_Melt's avatar

The problem is not just about what questions are being asked. People are swamping questions without political intent with politically deranged responses. If politics had its own designated spot, we could reprimand and censor those who trash threads with political ravings.

janbb's avatar

@Patty_Melt It’s only going to get more intense as the election looms and there’s no new development so there’s not much to do about it. If you post in General and feel the ravings are off topic, they can be flagged.

SQUEEKY2's avatar

I have gotten a little off topic in General and my answer was completely removed, so if you are interested in staying rigidly on topic I suggest following General catigory .

KNOWITALL's avatar

@Patty_Melt The real problem is if Trump is elected again, we may as well not talk about politics for the entire second term, because we can’t have conversations without emotional vomiting all over everyone else.

There’s a reason many conservatives left and the site is feeling less used. No one likes an echo chamber for intellectual stimulation.

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@KNOWITALL – I can’t argue with that :D

Patty_Melt's avatar

It would be ideal if the chatroom were working. The political rants could be banished to there.

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@Patty_Melt -I can’t argue with that either :D

SQUEEKY2's avatar

@Patty_Melt They were working the last time I checked, but they quit working all the time too.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@SQUEEKY2 We’ll have to find something mutually interesting again, like your forests and tariff’s, otherwise we may never speak again…haha!

SQUEEKY2's avatar

I just checked they are working again, want to go streaking through the halls of the empty chat rooms?

Patty_Melt's avatar

I’ll tag you when it is a better hour of the day.
