Does anyone around here have a good nonlocal supplier of Grand Manan dulse?

Asked by Jeruba (55836points) September 6th, 2021

By “nonlocal” I mean you have to get it from afar because you don’t live near where it’s harvested and packaged for sale.

I’ve had an unapologetic taste for the stuff since I was a youngster. Growing up in the Northeast, I used to get it fresh (well, dried—but not stale) in the Maritime provinces of Canada. Now and then my relatives down east send me some. It’s a delicious treat, always gone too fast.

For a while I could get it in an organic foods shop in the Santa Cruz mountains, but not any more.

Once in a while I order some online, paying too much for something not up to par. Recently I took a chance on some “wild, hand harvested” Eden dulse (“from pristine shores of Maine”). Based on this sample, Maine dulse is not up to the standard of Grand Manan’s.

If you know the stuff, if you love the stuff, please tell me where I can get the real thing online, preferably not paying $8.99 or more for a bag of a size I used to get for a nickel as a kid on summer trips to New Brunswick.

I’ve never ordered dulse myself but Sandy Flagg has a shop on Grand Manan Island and I think he will mail dulse to you for $11.00 a pound plus postage.

Call Roland’s Sea Vegetables at 506–662-3468 or email seaveggies@yahoo.com to place an order.
