Has the craze of Virtual Kidnappings happened in the US?

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/04/29/world/americas/29mexico.html?ref=world As you can see on this news story, is going on in Mexico and a lot of parents are being affected by it.

Last month a guy was kidnapped about 10 miles away from me, they found him out in the desert shot execution style. His brother in law was a major drug dealer or something. They usually target people with family members involved in some illigal activity and who won’t want to go to the cops and who can come up with large amounts of money quickly.
