Do we have a moral imperative to explore?

Asked by philosopher (9065points) October 5th, 2011

I have often thought we do and that it is part of human nature.
Research and exploration is how humans make progress. Do you agree?

I wouldn’t call it a moral imperative, but more like human nature. And yes, I think most people have it.

@Blackberry
I agree it is human nature.

I agree with Blackberry and Philosopher but it’s nice to think of it as a moral obligation in a perfect world, it might be? when the intent is pure. It isn’t always. Mostly it’s control and greed I think in those specified instanced mentioned in the video. He really didn’t need to say much beyond the first sentence.

I can not comprehend how some people oppose exploration and research. It seems as if, they wish to repress human nature.

I believe “the search for meaning and signficance” is unavoidable. It is there. If it ever stops, we atrophy. Maybe we are still walking around, but are mortally ill if we stop monitoring life’s meaning. I also think that is why there is so much unrest in people who think they have analyzed and concluded because we all know if there is no peace attached to the decision apart from drowning guilt then more searching is necessary. Guilt will be starved out when the light that is beyond the concept of religion finally shines.

Do you agree that if, we do not explore and conduct research we would atrophy? Exploration and research is why we all live longer.
I agree that religion does hold us back because some people seem unable to separate their faith form Scientific documentation.
I am an Agnostic but I respect religionists people right to believe as they choose. As long as they do not attempt to force everyone to live according to their beliefs or prevent research.

@philosopher I don’t Oppose it, I would just like the reasons we do it to be made a bit more clear to the public. I agree it is a wonderful thing, but sometimes you end up with Blood Diamonds.

That is why we need a Government that actually protects the Public interest. We don’t Politicians that work for Lobbyist or only the wealthiest.

Indirectly, perhaps. God’s first species-wide command was to “be fruitful and multiply.” Multiple people have to be in more than once place (and besides, use more resources), thereby necessitating exploration.

I want to believe. I just can not totally accept what can not be proven.The immoral world, the unfairness does not convince me.
Science finds logical answers and makes the quality of life better.

@philosopher Science has found logical answers to God, The earth, places, resources, particles, heat, planets, Inertia, motion, light, gravity, space…

People… and I fear, it never will. *We’re a bunch of unpredictable little bastards.

@GabrielsLamb Just keep in mind that “logical” isn’t always the same thing as “right.” I cite God, but I also cite that neutrino business.

Most religions do not condone murder of Innocent people. Apparently the Terrorist believe theirs does. This prevents humanity form making progress. We must move beyond War and the Barbaric nature of such people. They want us all dead. I view them as a representation of true evil.
Science will help humanity move forward and everyone should be taught Science.

I think it is a drive in more intelligent humans, yes. I don’t know if I’d go so far to say a moral imperative, although, “personally”, I tend to agree.

Thing is, you can’t turn a donkey into a racehorse, and there are plenty of people that PREFER to live in ignorance because their ignorance somehow serves them.

philosopher's avatar

@Coloma
The problem is their ignorance hurts all humans. Religionists fanatics try to stop Scientific research based on their beliefs. Despite that they are a small Minority in the US. The Republicans support them. Since the Conservatives run the party. This is a form of Fascism.
Lobbyist work against Alternative Energy research because the Oil Companies demand it. This holds America back and supports OPEC.
If the US wishes to revitalize our Economy being a leader in Alternative Research and all Research would certainly help. This research requires that the US. Government contribute because all other Governments do. Private Industry can not fund it alone.
