What do you think of Trump's indictment today?

Asked by Hawaii_Jake (37350points) June 8th, 2023

He’s been indicted for unlawful retention of classified documents and obstruction of justice and one more that I forget.

I’m very happy about it.

I’m putting this in General to prevent derailing the thread with garbage.

The man is a criminal.

I’m very excited to see what the right-leaning website I check out has to say.

I’m guessing there will be a mega thread with people saying the system is corrupt anyways, and Democrats are too busy trying to brainwash kids towards LGBT issues to enact real justice and save Mr. Trump.

You know that Gif of Snoopy dancing?

janbb's avatar

@ragingloli Not the one I had in mind but that one works too! More like one of these

I don’t think much of anything about it except what takes so long to get these indictments in motion?

I’ve listened to Democrats say for 7 years that Trump will quit, Trump will be impeached, Trump will go to jail. I’m tired of hearing this idealism over and over again. I do not celebrate, because it often winds up going nowhere.

I do support our DOJ and other agencies pursuing Trump or anyone who has broken the law. I just am fine leaving it to them and not giving the story so much publicity.

LadyMarissa's avatar

I had heard that it was going to happen today, but I had my doubts. My day got really busy & I had just gotten home & hadn’t heard the GREAT news!!! Before I do my happy dance, I want to see him behind bars…like that’s ever going to happen. You know, he could have walked away scot free but his ego just won’t let him!!!

seawulf575's avatar

I’ll have to see how it is written. What I have seen is that he is being charged under the Espionage Act which is a really difficult charge to prove. It isn’t just that he had records, it’s that he intended to or did sell those to a foreign government. If it is just having records, then I guess they ought to be charging ol’ Biden too. After all he had far more documents that were just wide open to anyone effectively. So I’ll wait to see what the actual charges are and what they believe is the evidence. After 6 years of bogus charges against Trump, I’m skeptical.

Hawaii_Jake's avatar

@seawulf575 You’re lying again. Biden readily gave back the documents. Trump personally gave instructions to hide documents. They are not comparable.

jca2's avatar

On the news, the legal anaylst described it the way @Hawaii_Jake described it. They said that was the problem – that Trump dug his heels in. They said his perfect defense would have been to say his staff was handling it and it was all a big mistake and then give back the documents, but he ruined that possibility by digging in his heels and saying he declassified the documents and he had no right or ability to do so. I hope he goes down. Even if he doesn’t go down, I hope it causes him a lot of headaches and is a big PITA to him.

The news (NBC news) also said that Trump is now using this for more fundraising. It seems like he uses every opportunity for more fundraising.

LadyMarissa's avatar

Oops, just received this from a friend. I had forgotten how he screwed himself as well…

MAJOR BREAKING: Donald Trump is facing five years in prison and a felony because of a law HE SIGNED in attempt to punish Hillary Clinton in 2018.

Oh this is GOOD!

The law HE SIGNED upgrades the crime of wrongly moving classified material from a misdemeanor to a felony.

Trump signed the bill after spending the 2016 presidential campaign accusing Hillary Clinton of improperly handling classified information.

“Trump certainly has legal exposure to Section 1924 given it was classified documents from his spaces in the White House that were removed to Mar-Lago,” said attorney Bradley P. Moss.

This evening, Trump posted on Truth Social that he would be indicted.

Trump said he must report to a Miami courthouse this Tuesday.

Sometimes I just LOVE Ms Karma. This would have been No more than a misdemeanor if it wasn’t for his ego!!!

SQUEEKY2's avatar

I really doubt he will ever see jail time , but an ankle bracelet and be restricted to Mar a lago for the next five or so years would be great.

jca2's avatar

@LadyMarissa I tend to be cynical, and I’m betting he is playing up to the dramatic aspect “woe is me” so when his hand is out, people send more money. He’s all about the Benjamin’s baby.

@filmfann is currently unable to able to reply here, due to uncontrolled joy and cackling.

Tropical_Willie's avatar

I wonder which, of his lawyers will try to bribe or intimidate a witness ?

That is TRUMP’S MO !

LadyMarissa's avatar

@SQUEEKY2 & @jca2 I agree with BOTH of you!!! There’s an angle to EVERYTHING he does & this is NO different. I cannot feel sorry for those he SCAMS as they fall for it over & over & over again!!! With any luck, that might be the next indictment. Now that he’s declared his candidacy, there are Federal laws that cover how he’s allowed to spend that money. I’m sure there should be a straight path to election fraud in that can of whoop-ass!!!

gorillapaws's avatar

@seawulf575 In the hypothetical situation where there was incontrovertible proof that Trump sold classified documents after the end of his presidency to Saudi Arabia, how would you feel about Trump? Would that be sufficient to consider him a traitor to the flag? or do you think the good outweighs the bad?

I’m pleased as it shows that no man is above the law in the United States which is as it should be.

LostInParadise's avatar

I am going to play devil’s advocate. What harm or potential harm was caused by Trump holding onto federal documents?

Response moderated (Off-Topic)
Blackwater_Park's avatar

@LostInParadise Depends on what those documents are but beyond that the damage in allowing it to pass without consequence is normalizing that behavior and weakening the defenses that keep our secrets safe. I’m of the opinion that intent matters though. Something like this should normally be handled quietly, but this is Trump we are talking about.

jca2's avatar

Trump is facing 20 years in prison for this alone and more indictments are coming.

chyna's avatar

@LostinParadise One of the documents (or maybe it was several) was being discussed at his golf club in Bedminster, NJ regarding plans on an attack on Iran. The attendees did not have classified clearance. This was in 2021. Military secrets absolutely need to be kept secret for the security of our soldiers.
trump wanted everyone in the room to know he kept classified documents that he himself passed a law that it was unlawful to keep .

To be fair, if Trump goes down for this, Biden should face some consequences also. Probably harder to prove intent though if that’s taken into consideration.

Just more distractions and political posturing. If he sold to another country then ues that’s a traitor. Whether Trump, Biden or any other US official.

seawulf575's avatar

@jca2 Actually, that might play into it. The Republicans in the House are demanding all information about the Jack Smith investigation, as far as what document assigned him, what guidance he was given for his investigation (what he was supposed to be investigating) and all that. They are also asking for a list of any FBI agents that might have assisted on the investigation for Smith and what their past history was…if any of them helped on any of the other scams against Trump. And basically, if he was given a wide open assignment that looked amazingly like “look for whatever you can to get Trump” then there is a defense opening there. Not to mention if there are FBI agents that helped, say, on the Russia Collusion scam, there is already solid evidence from Durham showing that they acted illegally and even made stuff up to get Trump. That also makes it harder for the DOJ to ignore the Biden scandals. Not to mention, if the assignment was to look at the documents at Mar-a-Lago and he starts digging into J6 or any other b.s. scams against Trump, he is outside the bounds of his assignment and anything he finds becomes inadmissible…Trumps attorneys could petition from solid ground that it was not an actual investigation but a political witch hunt.

jca2's avatar

@seawulf575 add to that, Trump says he, as President, had the power to just unclassify just by saying it or thinking it (he actually said that on the video clip they had on the news today), so if that’s true, Biden can say the same thing and Biden will be just as un-guilty as Trump. See the “whatabout” works both ways!

Response moderated (Off-Topic)
seawulf575's avatar

@jca2 As President, Trump definitely had the ability to declassify materials and there is no actual guidance for what is needed to be done to make it happen. But you missed one major point about Biden…he wasn’t president when he took the classified materials. He was Vice President. So for quite a few years he had these materials uncontained and illegally possessed. Care to tell me about how the whatabout works both ways? The better question is why it DOESN’T work both ways. Hillary lost control of all sorts of classified materials and an investigation had to be forced and then it was glossed over. Trump leaves office and almost the same day they are trying to get him on having classified materials and raid his home with FBI agents. Then Biden is found to possess more classified materials illegally than Trump and again…excuses are made and nothing is done about it. Can you see the trend here??

It’s a catch-22 situation. So I’m kind of happy but not too happy. I feel at worst Trump will only be prevented from running for office which would’ve been great if DeSantis wasn’t 2nd runner-up. So it may be hard to imagine someone worse than Trump but DeSantis will be worse. He knows how to loop around laws way better than Trump because he’s actually not an idiot.
Trump just wanted to be an American idol and set himself up for life. DeSantis wants to be a dictator and take over the Nation. I feel like DeSantis was either a bully in school growing up or was bullied and now wants his revenge on the Nation.

So although I should be ecstatically happy, I feel that DeSantis would pick up Trump’s Maga crowd on top of the Republicans that already are in his corner and may beat Biden.
Republican leaders know this, and thats why a lot of them are abandoning Trump.
They know Trump won’t win against Biden but DeSantis probably will.

tinyfaery's avatar

Nothing will happen. I have no faith in this country to do the right thing.

LostInParadise's avatar

@Pandora , I heard on the news that Trump can still run for office, even if he is in jail after being convicted.

Hawaii_Jake's avatar

Developing

He faces 37 criminal charges.

He showed plans of attack to people.

jca2's avatar

@seawulf575 I was being a bit facetious when I quoted Trump, because actually there is a procedure for declassifying documents, and Trump diddn’t follow it. Anyway, the argument isn’t going to be solved by you and me, it will be hashed out in court, so let’s let the scales of justice do their thing.

janbb's avatar

I heard on the radio that two of Trump’s lawyer resigned today but I haven’t yet seen corroboration of that in print.

Here’s the info on the legal team shake up.

What do I think? I hope that Trump gets what’s coming to him.

Many of you know I’m conservative. I’d love to see Trump go away. But a trail for his alleged crimes is likely years away which will be too late to stop Trump from running for President.

Trump is death to the Republican Party. If he is able to get the nomination then he will lose the Presidential election. If Trump doesn’t get the nomination then he will likely run as an independent (pull a Rose Perot independent 1992 candidate) and cause the Republican candidate to lose.

Liberals will win if Trump’s trial is delayed. But if Trump has a relatively quick trial and is found guilty then that opens the door for a strong Republican candidate to possibly win the Presidency.

Therefore liberals should hope that Trump has a long drawn out trial which would allow him to run (and lose). Or he has a quick trial and found innocent which would also allow him to run (and lose). Trump can’t win.

Trump is a disaster for the Republicans and a gift to the Democrats.

LadyMarissa's avatar

It was also announced today that Judge Aileen Cannon will be the Federal Judge presiding over this case when he turns himself in. She was the judge who blindly followed his every whim, but also the judge who managed to get Jack Smith on his back. This is exactly WHY I don’t do a happy dance until I KNOW the outcome!!!

janbb's avatar

@LadyMarissa I heard that too. I don’t see why ot has to go to that judge.

Meaningless if the end result isn’t significant jail time.

LostInParadise's avatar

What I find irksome about this whole thing is that it is hard to understand what Trump’s motive was for holding onto the documents. Surely, he was not planning to sell them to foreign governments. Then why did he tell lies about not having them and why did he do such a a poor job of securely storing them? Was Trump so stupid that he thought he was going to get away with this? What did his lawyers advise him to do?

flutherother's avatar

It is very odd behaviour. There were boxes and boxes of stuff piled up in a shower room at Mar a Lago. We can discount the possibility that Trump wanted to read it and I think that for Trump it was a kind of trophy he could show off to people he wanted to impress. Childlike behaviour, but that is Trump. I don’t believe he intended passing it on to foreign powers but leaving these documents lying about in a semi-public insecure location was highly irresponsible if not a little deranged.

Of course, he should be considered innocent until proven guilty, As for the indictment, I think it was inevitable. And justifiable.

^^Sorry but it isn’t really about defending trump. Even trump
isn’t about really defending himself. It’s all about staying relevant. And on the news no matter what. Be controversial. Creating a sustainable chaotic social and political environment to hide the fact that their views and beliefs on how the country should move forward are not being bought by most Americans. The only way for them to stay relevant is propping up a TV celebrity-clown-sociopath-douchebag with real power. A real shame to the country and to themselves imo.

LostInParadise's avatar

The thing about Trump is that he is a jerk. All he had to do was to return the documents. That’s what Biden and Pence did. If he is going to keep the documents, he could at least find a better place to put them than in the bathroom. And at least he could not show them to outsiders. This is the guy who was caught on tape bragging how he could get away with grabbing women’s crotches. This is the guy who claims the election was stolen and whose lawyers are afraid to have him testify under oath because they are sure that he will commit perjury. The really sad thing is that he has so many supporters from what appears to be an epidemic of jerkiness.
