What is the active "get me high" chemical in the legal weed substitutes?

Asked by RealEyesRealizeRealLies (30951points) July 13th, 2011

My friend came in from Florida with a couple packages of what he calls legal weed. There is no THC in it but I can verify that it definitely gets you high. It’s not like the high I remember from marijuana, but it’s doing something.

Makes me feel fuzzy brained.

I’ve never heard of this stuff before and I’m shocked that it’s perfectly legal in some states. Well, ok I tried it, and it’s… well, ok I guess. The buzz is not my style. I’d rather have a martini.

But what’s in it? Is it bad for you? It says on the packaging that it’s intended as an aromatic potpourri.

He brought in Head Trip, which made me lose my balance to the point of not being able to stand up. It was awful and lasted for two hours from one pipe toke. The other kind was Mr. Smiley Face and it was much easier going all around. I can’t believe this stuff is legal. I certainly wouldn’t want people on the road with it. What is it?

Hm. I’ve never heard of it. I generally avoid anything I can’t titrate, which pretty much limits things to alcohol.

Mr. Nice Guy has a web site listed as buy-herbal-incense (dot com). I’m not providing a link. My browser says that connection is Untrusted. So I’m not going there. There is no web site or contact info on the packaging for Head Trip.

Is it incense? Or “incense”, nudge-nudge wink-wink?

I’m so sorry. I’m really quite clueless. The stuff looked like potpourri softly ground. It was trying to look like weed, but it didn’t. Well, at least not like the MoHomeGrown I remember as a teenager. I don’t really know what new modern weed looks like. I saw some about ten years ago and it was all red and purple genetically optimized and just flourescent weird. This popourri didnt look like that either.

There are many legal pot alternatives. Some of them work, some of them don’t. But without knowing which one, it’d be impossible to tell you what the active ingredient is.

There was a question asked about it a while ago and I gave a pretty full write up of it, ya can check it out here

Most of them contain some sort of synthetic cannabinoid generally of the JWH strain

RealEyesRealizeRealLies's avatar

This stuff specifically said no cannabinoids. Thanks for the link. I’ll read up on it.

El_Cadejo's avatar

@RealEyesRealizeRealLies there arent cannnabinoids in it thats why it was legal. As I said, there are synthetic ones. A lot of the original ones used have been made illegal recently though.

RealEyesRealizeRealLies's avatar

Are they safe? One of them made my fingers tingle and I couldn’t focus my eyes on distant objects. It did not feel natural. I didn’t like it at all and won’t be doing it again.

El_Cadejo's avatar

@RealEyesRealizeRealLies imo not really. As I said in the post on the other thread there are too many negative side effects such as the ones you described, but they are only the mild ones, it can be much much worse. The other problem is these compounds were first synthesized relatively recently so we dont have any idea what the long term effects of them are. if I were you I would stay away from them and just stick with good ol mary jane

I would imagine the age of designer drugs is just coming out of its infancy. Can’t imagine where it will go from here. I wonder if big pharm will ever produce an over the counter hallucinogen reality vacation. Surely they will tell us thare synthetic will be much safer than any natural substance.

El_Cadejo's avatar

@RealEyesRealizeRealLies highly unlikely imo not so much the part about them saying its safer but more the hallucinogen being allowed thing. we’re very much against hallucinogens in this world sadly.

Makes sense. Society is usually against and misrepresentative of anything misunderstood. Especially if it’s something that invites questioning of the society against it.

@RealEyesRealizeRealLies Unfortunately that assessment is dead on.
