Under what circumstance have you seen a Jelly banned from Fluther, and, generally, how long has it been since you've seen it occur?

Asked by ibstubro (18804points) January 4th, 2015

I’m not suggesting naming names.
I just think it would be instructive to know what can get you banned, especially in the current tidepool.

I would hope that with the current shrinkage in the Tide Pool, unless there’s spamming, trolling or flaming going on, there would not be any banning at this point.

ibstubro's avatar

My hope, too, @jca.

But worth discussing, I think. I tossed my (laughably) third question of the day on it!

It’s been a while since someone was banned, not counting spammers. I don’t know if that has changed since I stepped down. Remember the profile page looks the same for people that close their account, suspensions, and bans. So it’s hard to say why someone is gone just from a missing profile page.

OK, no naming names.

There was that jelly I really like. They were a helpful jelly and didn’t seem to have done any offence. Three months ago I was checking my PM box when I found that their PMs to me had gone. I searched for them but was greeted by the king-of-the-sea. It looked like that jelly was banned, because if they left by themselves the PMs would still stay. About a week later the PMs reappeared and their profile was no longer “eaten”. At that point I was pretty sure they were banned, though I have never seen anyone being banned for that short.

And since the day they got banned I haven’t seen them.

@Mimishu1995 The same thing happens if someone is suspended. From the mod side of things, there is only one way to keep someone off the site, and that’s to “ban” them in the system. So, when someone is being given a suspension, they are technically “banned” in the system for the length of their suspension. Then, once the suspension is over, they are unbanned and everything returns to normal. That is why there is no way to differentiate between someone being suspended or banned just by looking for their profile (or pms). Only a mod or the individual person could clarify what the situation is.

I was suspended for using a body double to get the Guacamole Award. ;-(

A woman hating, sexist, cowardly abuser who cried like a pussy when he was deservedly binned.
Not noticed any banning for a long time, not to say it hasn’t occurred.
“binned” not a typo, just better terminology

Last week. She was having a rough time.

A person was banned about a year ago for using false accounts to give themselves lurve. This has been discussed elsewhere.

We ban jellies by the dozen almost every day for spamming. As for established, non-spamming jellies, it hardly ever happens. You’d have to demonstrate a flagrant, willful and repeated disregard for the rules to actually get banned. There would be warnings and probably a suspension before that happened. An exception to this might be a “spoof” account set up by an established member in addition to their main account; if for some reason this spoof account violates the rules, it could be summarily banned without actually banning the user.

Which brings up another important point: suspensions are not the same as banning. They may look the same from the outside (user-deleted accounts, suspended accounts, and banned accounts all display the same way). Some suspended members have even claimed to have been banned. But a suspension is revokable after a specified time period.

Thanks, @thorninmud.
I’ve never personally known or suspected a jelly being banned. Maybe I don’t pay close enough attention.

I was threatened with being banned for telling the truth and refusing to shut up. I had to weigh whether the telling the truth was worth being banned. Eventually we came to a compromise. I told the “authorities” here to stop calling me a liar and I’d shut up. But I still tell this story from time to time, just to put things in perspective.

It’s OK to rock the boat here, but not TOO hard.

jca's avatar

It seems two of the Vamps have been banned, unless I’m mistaken.

Earthbound_Misfit's avatar

^Well that’s sad.

Seaofclouds's avatar

@jca As mentioned above, it looks the same, whether it is a ban or a suspension or if they deleted their account on their own. It’s hard to say what the case is for them without asking them or a mod.

dappled_leaves's avatar

Yes, perhaps they just got bored. But I’d be surprised if two left, and one remained. They are close-knit.

jca's avatar

@Seaofclouds; According to this thread, they got bounced. That’s why I said (above) “unless I’m mistaken.” I’m always open to the possibility that I may be wrong, but I am just going by what was written here, publicly:

I’ve only seen someone banned for trying to sneak back in with another name and getting caught. I don’t know why they got banned in the first place.

JLeslie's avatar

Some jellies who were banned I wish were back. I assume they were banned. A couple of them had incredible minds.

Usually, people who are banned should be. Horrible trolling, spamming, or brutal personal attacks.

I don’t know how many have been banned it how recently. I don’t keep track.

zenzen's avatar

I was banned once but I really can’t remember why. Lisa is like family so she must’ve had good reason.

We’ve had our share of crazy trolls. Remember that Randy guy lol?

Dutchess_III's avatar

Oh, what was his name with a picture of a world map painted on someone’s butt? That was the first person I met on Fluther. I liked him, but apparently he turned out to be very bad. Auggie even PM’d me on fb warning me about him. Very bad.

longgone's avatar

^ I will PM you with his name.

Dutchess_III's avatar

I remember who it was now. Just came to me.

JLeslie's avatar

He was brilliant. I was shocked when he was kicked off. I guess I never saw the really bad posts. Maybe they were deleted by the time I was on a Q.

dappled_leaves's avatar

@JLeslie I think it was a PM thing.

Blackberry's avatar

I forgot I’m not supposed to say names, but I knew someone was missing from Fluther. Whatever happened to “world map painted on someone’s butt”?

ucme's avatar

I knew him as a world class arse.

jca's avatar

I thought that was tits with a cleavage, not a butt. He’s been gone a long time – at least a year.

Mimishu1995's avatar

@jca I think he was still around when I first joined. I remember seeing his response in one of my questions maybe. I don’t know who he really is since I have never got to know him yet.

JLeslie's avatar

I always thought it was an ass. I hope he is ok. I used to see him in fb now and then. I haven’t in forever. I don’t know if he unfriended me or he just doesn’t go on a lot, or if the programming of fb just doesn’t have him pop up in my feed. I wish he hadn’t done things that wound up with banning him. He was a wealth of information on certain topics. Anything regarding sociology or mental illness his responses were very interesting.

I miss several others. Some I see on fb. It’s not the same in Facebook though.

jca's avatar

@JLeslie: If you look at @Dutchess_III Jan 2015 Meta question about the Frizzer (circa 2009), it will be like a walk down Memory Lane. So many people who were active then that are gone now. Only a few on that thread are still around.

JLeslie's avatar

I don’t know if I can do it. It might depress me.
