Hosting free neighborhood internet?

Asked by sparkky (93points) October 4th, 2008

I am trying to figure out how I can put a node on top of my house so I can host free internet for my neighborhood – in a secure manner too. I don’t want to be sued for security breaches, etc. but I think we have the means to offer free internet to our neighborhood if the possibility exists. Any leads?

Create a Wi-Fi network

Wi-Fi network, raise money from the community to pay for additional remote antennae (signal boosters). Find other houses in the area that would like to have said antennae hanging off the side of their houses. Pick a password that only your neighbors would know.

Last but not least, prepare for super slow surfing speeds. Assuming you get the fastest possible internet speed “for YOUR money” and it’s a business class cable connection, all it takes is one user with Bit Torrent, or an addiction to crap like youtube and Limewire to murder it for everyone.

get a router from these guys: fon and encourage your neighbours to also. If you need extended coverage, I think they sell more powerful antennas through that site also.
